My name is Deidra, and I was recently diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, HER2+, ER+, PR-, all negative genetic testing. I’m a mom of two amazing boys who are my world and I have an amazing support system, I consider myself lucky.
There I was nervous AF! About to get a biopsy of three confirmed suspicious spots, two in my left breast and one in my left axillary lymph node. I’m terrified and literally physically shaking.
I make friends everywhere I go so in this scenario it’s no different. I’m chatting up the nurse and we get to talking about Xanax. Umm hell yes I’ll take some! She provides and it starts to calm me down but doesn’t stop me from being ridiculous. I have the nurse laughing and the doctor comes in mid laughter.
She joins in too and I literally explain how I have a driver outside who will take us anywhere we wanna go to get drinks. It’s pre-diagnosis so what’s the harm?! The doctor says, “OK I’ll explain each step of the process and I’ll make sure that you’re completely numb before we do anything. If you feel anything let me know because you shouldn’t.”
I look at the doctor and say without skipping a beat, “Doctor, you’re gonna give me a titty twister aren’t you to make sure I’m numb!??” The nurse, doctor and I were laughing so hard. I told her it’s not even the Xanax talking I would have said the same thing regardless. I simply cannot help myself. Too funny and no they hadn’t ever heard that one before!
That is my hilarious biopsy story. I hope it brings laughter to this ugly thing called cancer. XOXO. I mess around with all my doctors, and encourage you to as well. Think about it, especially in the oncology world, they deliver such hard news day in and day out, give ‘em laughter in return!! Keep fighting all and stay strong I’m on your team! XOXO
